Local Community

Right at the heart of the community, Lakeside plays an important role in supporting many local charities. We continuously strive to support local organisations through donations and sponsorship and are proud to have strategies in place to help Lakeside become even more environmentally friendly.

Charitable donations

We are always exploring new ways in which Lakeside can benefit the local community. Some of our recent initiatives include working with Panathlon Challenge to to support local disabled children in Thurrock through an investment of new sports equipment for Beacon Hill School in South Ockendon.

We also fund organisations with Lakeside Gift Cards and many local schools and charities for raffle prizes.

Corporate donations

Every year Lakeside donates money for Corporate Sponsorship to local schools, charities and groups for community activity. As part of 2011's corporate donations we donated to the Thurrock Cycle Marathon.

2011 donations totalled £15,000.00

Sponsorship

In 2012, Lakeside is proud to sponsor the first ever Thurrock International Film Festival which will take place in the last week of June (24th-30th). As an open competitive festival anyone can enter a film and, if shortlisted, that film will be sent to celebrity judges and screened at the festival! There will also be special screenings of classic films as well as workshops and talks; including an evening with Barry Norman discussing his favourite films.

Coin Collections

If you work for a local charity or would like to collect money one Saturday at Lakeside then please email or write to us with the details of your charity and registration number. We will contact you to discuss dates and availability.

Thurrock Community Chest

Lakeside has been a trustee of Thurrock Community Chest for many years and plays an active role in deciding how the Mayor's charity raises and allocates funds to local projects and organisations. As well as providing free promotional space for local groups to sell raffle tickets to our shoppers, we host the annual grand prize draw and Lakeside donates £750 worth of Lakeside Gift Cards as a raffle prizes.

St Luke's Hospice

Lakeside has also been a key corporate partner of St Luke's Hospice in Basildon for many years and supports fundraising efforts by the team there. We also host the St Luke's Tree of Light service every year at Christmas, so that shoppers can dedicate a light in memory of a loved one. We have also provided the location for St Luke's Stiletto and Slipper Midnight Walk for the past three years.

Awareness days

Another way of getting involved in charity events at Lakeside is free promotional space on the malls. If you feel that your charity needs to gain awareness in the community, why not speak to us? We can offer a limited amount of free mall promotional space for charity events and promotions throughout the year.

In 2012, we have already hosted a flash mob for Sports Relief and awareness days for Essex Air Ambulance, the Territorial Army (TA) and St John’s Ambulance.

Singing at Christmas

Lakeside currently works with local schools and community groups and welcomes their members to carol sing and coin collect at Lakeside during December.

Waste management

Waste management materials include cardboard, metal, plastic, glass, waste electrical electronic equipment (WEEE) and other general waste.

The changes made to the WEEE legislation in 2007, where electrical retailers have to offer a solution to destroy any second hand goods, has had a significant impact on the rise in waste at the centre. Another factor that has increased waste would be the amount of retailers changing their packaging from plastic to cardboard to become more eco-friendly.

Lakeside is proud to say that all of our waste produced on site is recycled and NONE is sent to landfill sites.

Energy saving

The technical team at Lakeside is always looking at new initiatives to reduce the centre’s use of carbon to prevent environmental damage.

If your store is running a successful CR (Corporate Responsibility) initiative, let us know so we can all work towards improving our community and environment.

CR Policy

All Capital Shopping Centres (CSC) centres are committed to working closely with the communities we serve and operating responsibly in terms of care for the environment, reduction in energy consumption and promotion of increased recycling of waste. We continue to be rated as a top 100 company by Business in the Community in their corporate Responsibility Index and remain constituent members of the FTSE4Good, Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes and JSE SRI Index.

In November 2010, CSC was proud to be awarded the rare and valuable CommunityMark, developed by Business in the Community. It is just recognition of the dedication and work of staff throughout the business, and working with our community partners, dealing with issues that are important to us and, we know, our customers. Only by a focused approach and working closely together can our key objectives be successfully accomplished. Our success is based on innovative community programmes tailored to the locations where we operate. We recognise that our centres are part of the hub of the communities in which they are located and the projects developed with our partners reflect local needs.
